Scar Creams

Scar creams are one of the most common ways to improve the look of your scars. Because scar creams are designed to hydrate and smoothen the skin, prompt and regular use of these creams can make your scars fade and become less noticeable. The main purpose of scar creams is to accelerate the healing of the tissue in the top layer of the scarred skin. This is why when you apply the cream you should massage them at the same time. This will greatly help with the elasticity of the scar and the surrounding skin.

I personally use scar creams a lot and I complement the use of professional scar creams with the use of some natural oils, which are great for skin health in general. Read more about which scar creams I use.

Skin Graft Surgery

Skin grafts are usually recommended for more serious scars or large scarred areas, such as burn scars. With skin grafts, the surgeon replaces the damaged scarred skin with the healthy skin harvested from another party of your body. Skin grafts have been used for a long time and therefore surgeons are well skilled in this procedure. The recovery period can be long and there are higher risks of complications. The results vary from person to person, as it depends on the person’s healing capabilities and skin properties.

Skin graft surgery was my treatment of choice due to the extent of my scars. And I remember my surgeon saying to me again and again – everyone’s skin heals at a different pace and the best healing method is time. So you have to be very patient and give your body plenty of time to recover and heal properly.

Laser Treatment

Laser treatment is one of the pricier options for removing scars. With laser treatments, the specialist will try to erase the appearance of the outer layer of the skin. The laser targets the tissue and blood vessels to remove the unnecessary redness and darkness of the scar.

Scar Removal Injections

If your scars are raised above the normal skin level, such as keloid scars, then a good treatment to look into is scar removal injections. This technique removes the excess collagen in the scar and thus reduces its size. The final result will be a scar that has been flattened out and less noticeable.

Using Natural Ingredients to Improve the Appearance of Scars

You can find natural remedies for almost everything.

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera really helps with hydrating the skin. You can put it directly to the surface of your skin and massage it in a circular motion for a few minutes. If the aloe vera is 100% pure it will quickly absorb into your skin and it won’t leave any trace. You can use aloe vera as often as you like, it’s beneficial to use it as part of your skincare routine, even if you don’t have any scars. Your skin will be nourished and will become healthier.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Mix together the apple cider vinegar and distilled water. Make sure that the distilled water is twice the amount of vinegar. Apply to the surface of your scar and let it dry. You can apply the mixture to your scar every night before you go to sleep.

What Worked for Me

There are several ways you can try to improve or remove your scars and I hope you find the treatment that works best for you. I personally underwent reconstructive surgery due to my scars covering an extensive area, and it worked really well.

I continued caring for my scars by using various scar creams, ad per the advice of my surgeon.  The procedure I underwent is fairly new and was developed by a very successful surgeon in Istanbul. It uses a special technique to allow for faster recovery and better success. You can read more about dealing with scars and this particular breakthrough procedure in my book Living With Scars
