Best Scar Creams I Used after My Skin Graft Surgery

Several years have passed after the traumatic event that caused my scars, so I decided it was time to do something about it. My scars were very visible and covered a large area of my body. I knew that my worth does not depend on my physical appearance, but the stigma of these scars was keeping me away from many activities. I’ve been living my life in fear, and knowing that I can’t go on like this forever, I decided to research scar treatments and scar creams.

When I decided to undergo a breakthrough procedure, I knew I was in it for the long run. The surgery was a success but it was a difficult time for me – both physically and emotionally. You can read more about my experience in my book Living With Scars.

To help speed up the healing process of skin graft scars my surgeon advised me to apply several scar creams – and it was important to use different scar creams on my skin graft and my donor area.

Below I explain which scar creams I used during the recovery period. These were suggested to me by my surgeon and you don’t need a prescription for them.

Bepanthen Plus

Bepanthen Plus Wound Healing cream is one of the best antiseptic scar creams out there. It is designed to accelerate wound healing and prevent infections. I used this scar cream in the first two months after surgery on both my skin graft and my donor area.

Bepanthen Scar Gel with Massage Roller

This is a silicone gel that contains Pro-Vitamin B5, which helps moisturize and reduce scar redness and itching. The silicone gel forms a protective barrier over the scar to help lock moisture into the skin. It also has a small massage roller to help massage the gel into your scar and improve the elasticity of your skin.

Contratubex

These patches are specifically designed to heal your wounds and scars overnight. You can apply the patch before bed and it will greatly reduce the redness, and swelling and make your skin smooth. Contratubex prevents excessive scar formation.

I also had to use some creams containing cortisone, and these you need to apply very carefully and only follow the advice of a medical professional. These help thin the areas of the skin graft, usually the edges, where the scar becomes too thick and is raised above the normal skin.

During the recovery period, I had to wear a tubular bandage on my skin graft. What this does is it basically compresses your skin. This will help your skin draft heal better and prevent the area to become raised higher than your normal skin.

The tubular bandage I used is from Tubigrip, but you can use any brand, they are all good.

After the initial 6 months period of using the above scar creams, my surgeon advised me that I should continue caring for my scars with other creams that contain silicone, natural oils, and aloe vera. The Scar Creams that I used and gave me great results are:

Organic Aloe Vera Gel 100%

It’s really important to use aloe vera gel in the beginning as it does wonders for healing wounds and scars. It moisturizes the skin and nourishes it. I always try to find 100% aloe vera, with no other ingredients, as this means I don’t have to worry about any ingredients that might be included. The one I found works wonders and I highly recommend this product.

Silicone Gel

This is a silicone gel that flattens, softens, and smooths scars, relieves the itching, pain, and discomfort of scars, and reduces any redness. This gel is the number one recommended skincare product by doctors and pharmacists. One of the ingredients is onion extract, which is a proven natural ingredient to help with scars. You can use it for both old and new scars – including acne scars, surgery scars, scars from burns, cuts, and other injuries.

Add Actives C20 Tetraforce Activator

This is the best serum containing activated Vitamin C I have found so far. The vitamin C concentrate is ideal for mature skin as well as skin that is sensitive to acidic vitamin C serums. When used regularly, the serum ensures a fresher, softer, more radiant, and even complexion. Add Actives C20 slows down the process of photoaging, brightens hyperpigmentation and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and generally improves skin texture.

Add Actives C20 Tetraforce Activator contains the most stable form of Vitamin C and many other powerful natural antioxidants. The combination of all the ingredients improves the appearance of the skin and protects the skin from the harmful effects of radicals. You can add a couple of drops of this serum to your cream and apply it to your skin.

Green People Organic Nappy Cream Baby Balm

I used this cream because it’s rich with organic natural oils that nourish my skin graft and donor area. Its rich natural ingredients make my skin heal faster and keep it moisturized all day long. This cream is designed for babies, but I find it great as a scar cream. It contains Omega-3 and omega-6 and soothing zinc oxide. The ingredients in this cream are:

Sunflower Seed Oil, Beeswax, Zinc Oxide, Hemp Seed Oil, Cocoa Butter, Shea Butter, Lecithin* (From Sunflower Oil), Calendula Officinalis (Marigold) Flower Extract, Chamomile Flower Oil, and more.

I apply it in the morning and evening.
